“The queerest place with the strangest people in it leading the oddest lives”
Charles Dickens

We are a Harrogate based business that does things differently, thinks differently and has a different vision to others.
For hundreds of years, discerning individuals have visited the picturesque Yorkshire town to restore body, mind and soul by relaxing, indulging and socialising. We have sought to capture the spirit of Harrogate, synonymous with its beautiful and restorative nature, and deliver it in a bottle to you.

Introducing W.Slingsby

Since 1571, when William Slingsby discovered the unique properties of the natural spring water from the Tewit Well in Harrogate, discerning individuals have sought out the picturesque Yorkshire town to restore body, mind and soul by relaxing, indulging and socialising. Slingsby did things differently, thought differently and had a vision that others considered to be extraordinary or even, a little odd; he epitomised the Spirit of Harrogate and we are proud that our unique London Dry Gin bears his name.

Restore Your Spirit

Harrogate and surrounding areas predominantly stand on a fold of carboniferous rock (sandstone grits) described as an anticline running North East to South West across the district. This anticline created some 340 million years ago, is periodically fractured with mudstone, siltstone and limestone. It is this unique bedrock formation which defines the basis for the huge variety of naturally occurring springs in the area.

Discover Harrogate

Following Slingsby’s discovery of the Tewit Well in 1571, Harrogate soon became known as “The English Spa” town and over the next 400 years, the key events were as follow:
• St John’s Well, discovered by Dr Stanhope in 1631, was recognised as medicinal and restorative in its nature.
• Harrogate was the first place in Britain to bottle water in 1740 and has had a strong heritage of bottled water ever since and continues to this day.
• The Stray was created in 1788 by an act of Parliament, creating 200 acres of open common land to connect the growing number of springs and to provide fresh air for visitors from their smog ridden cities.
• The Bath hospital was built in 1826, later to become the Royal Bath Hospital in 1889, to accommodate patients coming to the town for the restorative properties of the waters. After World War II, the newly formed NHS recognised taking Harrogate waters as a legitimate prescription treatment up until 1968.
• The Royal Pump Rooms (which were connected to the Royal Bath Hospital) was built in 1842, to provide a convenient access to the most sulphurous well in the world and became a museum in 1953.
• Harrogate’s Royal Baths were opened in 1897 to satisfy the ever growing demand of the Victorian elite for the town’s waters, and served the public until 1969.
On the 400th anniversary of Slingsby opening The Tewit Well, it was finally sealed in 1971, although the Victorian Well Head can still be seen on The Stray to this day.
